LA ROSITA ($25 and Under) (212) 663-7804; 2809 Broadway, near 109th Street; $; AE, MC, V
This cheery little Cuban restaurant is popular for its tasty, copious, soul-warming fare. It is a no-frills place, with stacks of tempting Cuban sandwiches displayed in the window, a busy little counter up front and small wooden tables in the dining area under bright fluorescent lights. Among recommended starters are the Galician white-bean soup with shards of smoky pork, greens and potatoes; chorizo frito; and marinated octopus in vinegar and lemon with olives, peppers and onions. Aside from the sandwiches, main courses include sliced roast pork with a white rice and bean mixture; shrimp with pickled red peppers in a buttery garlic sauce; codfish stew; chunks of chicken breast sauteed with black beans and rice in a garlic sauce, and Spanish omelet.
